Most executive coaches have never held a senior legal leadership role. Most legal mentors have never been accountable for business results.
Chaka has done both.
He coaches you one-on-one, tailored to your role, ambitions, and organization.
A confidential discussion about the leadership challenge or opportunity in front of you. No pitch. No obligation.
Ready to lead as enterprise executives, not simply advise on legal risk.
Preparing for greater scope, C-suite visibility, boardroom presence, and the path to General Counsel.
Navigating a new mandate, an expanded leadership role, a critical relationship, or a consequential career decision.
Chaka’s one-on-one coaching is designed to help you make a stronger impact in the role you have now, and prepare intentionally for the role you want next. Whether your priority is elevating your leadership, aligning legal strategy with business priorities, or navigating a high-stakes professional moment, coaching helps you:
Build the executive presence, strategic judgment, and organizational credibility required for broader leadership roles.
Develop the financial fluency and commercial perspective that position you to create, and be recognized for, greater business impact.
Move beyond delivering legal advice to becoming a trusted strategic partner to the CEO, board, and executive team.
The focus is practical: helping you expand your influence, communicate in the language of business, lead through complexity, and become a more strategic partner to the CEO, board, and executive team.
Move beyond issue-spotting to help shape business direction, priorities, and outcomes.
Build alignment across the business, without relying on formal authority.
Deliver high-stakes messages with clarity, credibility, and appropriate discretion.
Understand the metrics, tradeoffs, and value drivers that matter to the CFO, CEO, and board.
Show up as a calm, authoritative voice when the organization needs judgment most.
Build a high-performing team, clarify priorities, and position legal as a business enabler.
Lead through investigations, scrutiny, conflict, and uncertainty with composure and perspective.
Sustain energy, perspective, and sound judgment throughout a demanding leadership career.
A confidential, no-pressure discussion about the opportunity or challenge in front of you.
Identify the outcomes you want, the stakeholders who matter, and the capabilities that will create the greatest impact.
Work one-on-one through a focused coaching plan tailored to your role, priorities, and pace.
Over more than three decades in corporate leadership, government, and private practice, Chaka Patterson has led from both the legal and business sides of the table, as a General Counsel, business executive, board member, and advisor.
He served as Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary at Adtalem Global Education. Earlier, as Vice President of Treasury and Investor Relations at Exelon, he served as the company’s liaison to Wall Street and helped prepare senior management for quarterly earnings calls.
That combination is rare, and central to his coaching. Few legal leaders have also held responsibility for treasury and investor relations. Chaka helps clients connect legal judgment to enterprise value, capital allocation, financial performance, and shareholder impact, using the language CEOs, CFOs, boards, and investors understand.
The same material that shapes the coaching, in book form. What the job actually asks of a public company General Counsel, written by someone who has held it.
“The role of the General Counsel has evolved. Today’s GC must be more than a legal expert—they must be an enterprise value lawyer. Chaka Patterson captures this shift with clarity and practical insight.”
Kenneth C. Frazier
Former Chairman & CEO, Merck & Co., Inc.
In their words: General Counsel and in-house leaders on what changed.
“His coaching challenged me to elevate from providing legal advice to driving strategic insight — to think in terms of valuation, capital allocation, and shareholder impact.”
Jason Carter
Chief Legal Officer & Board Secretary, Vera Therapeutics
“He helped me strengthen the connection between legal strategy and business performance — to think and communicate with the precision of a CFO while leading with the judgment of a GC.”
Val Bomar
Deputy General Counsel, Large Industrial Company
“He’s not just a coach — he’s a thought partner who has been pivotal in helping me grow as a trusted advisor and business leader.”
Stephanie Gaines
Vice President, Legal Counsel – Litigation, Labor & Employment, Tractor Supply Company
“He helped me bridge the gap between complex technical risk and business impact — teaching me how to articulate legal and operational issues in financial terms that resonate with the C-suite.”
Jay Mitchell
VP, Senior Assistant General Counsel, Head of Privacy & Cybersecurity Legal, Leidos

A short, candid conversation: where you are, what you want to change, and whether coaching is the right lever. No pitch deck.
General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, rising legal executives, and senior business leaders who want to improve their financial and business acumen. Anyone who wants more than legal expertise alone.
Three core pillars: financial acumen, strategic insight, and leadership and influence. The goal is to speak the language of business, understand financial realities, contribute to strategic decision-making, and support governance, expanding your influence well beyond traditional legal advice.
It is taught from the seat. Chaka has been the General Counsel, the Fortune 100 Treasurer and Head of Investor Relations, and the AmLaw 50 partner, so the coaching is built on 30+ years of doing the job, not on a licensed curriculum.
This page is one-on-one. Chaka Strategy also offers customized workshops and team engagements to elevate professionals and whole legal departments.
Typically virtual and scheduled around your calendar, with cadence set during scoping. In-person is available for select engagements.
Yes. Nothing discussed is shared with your organization, and engagements are never named without written permission.
